Today Google has turned 10, so I was trying to find out how Google used to appear when it was first ever launched, way back in 1998. And luckily I not only found the first web page created as Google.com but also the prototype of the Google search engine, which was uploaded on the Internet as a subdomain of stanford.edu.
Here is the FIRST EVER Google - Google.com [M]
As a subdomain of stanford.edu - Google.Stanford.edu [M]
Beta version of Google.com - alpha.Google.com [M]
In the third link (alpha.google.com) above, you can see an email subscription option, although of course you cannot subcribe to it now, but on clicking on the archive link below it, you will be shown 6 threads whose authors are of course Larry Page and Sergey Brin, DO click on those threads and see the THEN updates on Google !
And read this Google About page too...

great that u have written about it :)
wow..google was GOOGLE! before...
nice post btw =)
I heard about Google turning 10 years. It was all on news that Google will turn 10 years soon. They also have made a special page, with time line, cos they are turning 10 years.
Yes they have made a time line of google, but although they have put some screen shots of their earlier web-page looks, but they havn't given any link to visit exactly those web pages created by them, and neither can you see the protocol of google search engine nor the subscription threads with the very first updates from larry and sergey themselves !
Yes Sidrah.....similar to Yahoo!.....Google was also Google! i.e. with an exclamation mark in the end !
