Blogger Help - How To Submit Your Blogs Sitemap To Google

Generally speaking, sitemap is simply a website-map, showing all the pages and sub-pages of a website or a blog, which guides both visitors and search engines like Google, Yahoo etc. to roam around your blog. And when search engines roam around your blog, it is called indexing of your website. And as "indexing" is one of the most important aspects of SEO, so submission of sitemaps to Google/Yahoo/Bing is very very important.
[check out this post on how to submit your sitemap to Yahoo and Bing]
For visitors, sitemap (when displayed in HTML format - you can create and download your Blog*Spot sitemap in HTML format from here, then upload this html file to MyDataNest and finally link it from your blog), shows how the pages and their subpages are interconnected, making it easier for them to navigate around big websites.
And being a webmaster/blogger you must have a sitemap, as it's a search engine optimization tool too, that helps you to get more traffic from the search engines.
Now if you are using blogger as your blogging platform, then there is no direct method to simply upload an xml or HTML sitemap file to your blog. So you can follow these steps to add a site map to your blogspot blog:

STEP #1
Go to Google Webmaster Tools website. [Here
STEP #2
Login and then at the top (Add Site), type your blog's url :

STEP #3
Now you have to verify that you own that blog, so click on Verify your site, and select the "Add a Meta Tag" option.
Then copy the meta tag into your blog's "Edit HTML" section of  "Layout" tab, and save the template.

STEP #4
Then click on "Verify" at the bottom (in Google Webmaster account). So a message will be displayed:
You've successfully verified http://bikes.bloggerstop.net/.
STEP #5
Now click on Sitemaps link present at left side. Then click on "Add a Sitemap"
STEP #6
In "Choose Type", select "Add General Web Sitemap"

STEP #7
Then in the "My Sitemap url is" blank, type this:
atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=100 (If you have up to 100 posts)
And if you have more than 100 articles or posts, then you have to add more sitemaps, after you have already added the previous one, like these:
atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=101&max-results=100 (If you have up to 200 posts)
atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=201&max-results=100 (If you have up to 300 posts)
atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=301&max-results=100  (If you have up to 400 posts).

That's it, Now you can revisit your account after some days, and see a number of statistics provided by some of which are even better than Google analytics, as you can see the Google pagerank information for your blog's different pages, given by Google itself.

If you have 1000 or 2000 posts then?

should I do in "atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=100" in this passion, adding 100 posts in each sitemap! or any easy method..

January 28, 2009 7:40 AM delete

Hi gadgetsarea

you can make it max-results=1000, but I cannot guarantee you that it will add all the posts, without leaving anyone, cause there are some issues with the sitemaps of blogger blogs.

and even for 1000 posts, you'll hardly require 10 sitemaps, which is ofcourse not a big deal
(1000 posts for a normal blogger is the work of almost 2 years or atleast 1.5 years)

Divya Sai, Thanks for your cool replay, I just figured out if one use feedburner as blog feed, the limit to SiteMap would be 500 url's, so if 1000 or more posts, I feel the SiteMap would be "atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=500" and additional url's as you've mentioned above "atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=501&max-results=1000" and so on.., If not correct me in case!

Reply
avatar
January 28, 2009 10:15 AM delete

But Divya Sai, I wonder max results in all cases should be 500, (max-results=500) correct me if I am wrong.. Thanks again

atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=500

next sitemap:
atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=501&max-results=500

and similarly next:
atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1001&max-results=500

HI,
Once you have verified your blog, you are done with 4th step, now 5th step is simply clicking on a link "Add a Sitemap", so i guess there can be nothing wrong in that.....

So u are at step 6:
where you do not need any www, simply copy this:

atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=100

and paste it the blank, as displayed in the image at step 6...

Thanks Divya...
I did it..!!
But as you said there is no option like(Choose Type", select "Add General Web Sitemap"
).
I simply put that "atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=100"
Now its wrking........
Thanks alot...

Do NOT select the method of verification by uploading a html file,
as already mentioned by me (in 3rd step), verify by "Adding a meta tag" in your blog template !

Hello Ram,
yes you need to wait a few days, before you could see some updated stats in your account, just keep on adding content to your blog as usual, and try to find some friends who could connect/link to your blog from their blogs.

Welcome Srikanth...

@Dude
Once you have submitted the sitemap, only half of your work is done, now depending on your blog's popularity (PageRank) Google will keep on downloading your sitemap, and therefore the posts.
Your other half work is to frequently check your account (GWT account) for any errors etc. and then keep optimising them.

Yes Adnan,
you can add rss feed too, but those sitemaps written in the post above are enough, and will actually submit more pages than the usual rss sitemap, anyways there's no harm in adding more than 1 sitemap, to add a rss sitemap, click on "Add a Sitemap", then paste this in the blank provided:

feeds/posts/default?alt=rss

Your tags are perfect, anyways if the error persists, then first try this:
Change atom.xml with rss.xml (keep rest of the link-tag same)
i.e.
rss.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=100

If again error is detected, then instead of starting from 1, do it from 10, like this:

atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=10&max-results=100

You can try both these methods at the same, but plz do tell me your results.

Hi,

just to update you, I did both the things you suggested. They seem to be performing equally - none being better (screenshot here - http://is.gd/4YKTS )

However, one surprising thing is, only the maps with Status as errors have any indexing! And also, 3 or 4 more pages got indexed since morning; so now I am also not that sure if it is a matter of time or matter of 'waiting for Goddot!'

Can you make out something from this? Does this make sense to you?

What exactly is the message being displayed, when you hover your mouse over that yellow warning/exclamation mark?

Reply
avatar
November 19, 2009 12:00 PM delete

Thanks Sai for being around... still, and not giving up on me :D

I am not getting any message when I hover over the "warning" sign. But when I try and get more details on the sitemap, I get this Invalid URL error.

I guess, many other people have been getting the same error.

I am pretty clueles on how to proceed, becoz out of 500+ articles, just about 80 odd show up on Google Search. Therefore I would assume, all the other articles are still not indexed. Thats a collosal waste! :(

Reply
avatar
November 19, 2009 12:42 PM delete

Yeah this seems to be quite complicated... 8-}

Actually according to the error screenshot, it says the error is on line 3 of your sitemap. And in Blogger we cannot modify the sitemap file, as we do not have any access to it.
Even if you change the template, as the file is located on your domain(your_domain.com/atom.xml), this error will not be troubleshooted.

Is this "line 3" error common to other sitemaps you have submitted?

Reply
avatar
November 20, 2009 7:03 AM delete

Hi,

Yes, the Line 5 error is consistent across other errors maps.

Is there any other way we can submit the sitemaps? Not sure of this, but can we give Feedburner urls as sitemap?

Does this make sense?

Regards,
P

Ps: I know getting indexed is the KEY of getting of dungeons, else my site will languish there. Only other option will be to move to Wordpress :(

Yeah, of course you cannot add feedburner feeds, I was just checking all you xml files.
Well this can be the final try, lets see if it works :-/

Go to settings -> Site Feed
Now redirect your "Post Feed Redirect URL" to this address "http://feeds2.feedburner.com/PhoenixCapital"
Then save it

Now in GWT, add these two sitemaps:
atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=100
atom.xml?start-index=1&max-results=100

That's it.

Your Sitemap appears to be an HTML page. Please use a supported sitemap format instead.
