Add Yahoo Smiley Emoticons Above Blogger/BlogSpot Comment Form

If you have already enabled the comment-form feature in your blog*spot blog, then it would be better to add a list of smilies too, which can be used by the readers while commenting.

The comment-form with smileys, will look like this:

Or you can see it in action [and leave a smiley-comment too], at the bottom of this post !

To add these smileys, follow these steps:

STEP #1
First log in to Blogger
Then go to Layout -> click on "Edit HTML" tab, and click on "Expand Widget Templates" tick-box.

Now find this code :
<b:if cond='data:post.embedCommentForm'>
<b:include data='post' name='comment-form'/>

Now right IN-BETWEEN those two lines, add all these lines:
<div style='-moz-background-clip: -moz-initial; -moz-background-origin: -moz-initial; -moz-background-inline-policy: -moz-initial; width: 369; text-align: left; border: 1px solid #cccccc; padding: 5px; background: #eeeddf; height:86'>
<b>
<img border='0' height='18' src='http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/emoticons7/21.gif' width='18'/> :))
<img border='0' height='18' src='http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/emoticons7/71.gif' width='18'/> ;))
<img border='0' height='18' src='http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/emoticons7/5.gif' width='18'/> ;;)
<img border='0' height='18' src='http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/emoticons7/4.gif' width='18'/> :D
<img border='0' height='18' src='http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/emoticons7/3.gif' width='18'/> ;)
<img border='0' height='18' src='http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/emoticons7/10.gif' width='18'/> :p
<img border='0' height='18' src='http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/emoticons7/20.gif' width='22'/> :((
<img border='0' height='18' src='http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/emoticons7/1.gif' width='18'/> :)

<img border='0' height='18' src='http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/emoticons7/35.gif' width='24'/> 8-}
<img border='0' height='18' src='http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/emoticons7/100.gif' width='31'/> :)]
<img border='0' height='18' src='http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/emoticons7/102.gif' width='44'/> ~x(
<img border='0' height='18' src='http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/emoticons7/104.gif' width='30'/> :-t
<img border='0' height='18' src='http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/emoticons7/66.gif' width='18'/> b-(
<img border='0' height='18' src='http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/emoticons7/62.gif' width='18'/> :-L
<img border='0' height='18' src='http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/emoticons7/14.gif' width='34'/> x(
<img border='0' height='18' src='http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/emoticons7/24.gif' width='30'/> =))
</b>
</div>

STEP #2

Now find this code in the template:
</body>

And just BEFORE it, add this line:
<script src='http://files.main.bloggerstop.net/uploads/3/0/2/5/3025338/smiley.js' type='text/javascript'/><noscript><a href="http://bloggerstop.net" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: x-small;">Add Smilies</span></a></noscript>

Finally save the template.

OPTIONAL WORK:
Although the required javascript file has already been uploaded and linked by me in the code above (in RED), but as a backup, download and save this file on your PC:
Download this File:

Smiley.js ( As a zipped file )

And upload the file (smiley.js) to OpenDrive

Then copy the DIRECT LINK (streaming):

And you may use this direct-link instead of the one used in the code above.

That's it !
Now you can see smileys below your posts...

Hey your widget is not working!!!

Divya Sai said...

Dude this is working perfectly fine, and all the icons are clearly visible,

You know what, the images are hosted and linked directly from the INTERNET's top site - Yahoo!
They won't be displayed only when the servers at Yahoo will crash !

Hi Sharifuddin

In your blog, I have seen this in the comments section:
<h4 id='comment-post-message'>Catat Ulasan</h4>

Now right AFTER THIS, add the FIRST code,
then follow the instructions given above to add the second code...

(that means add the second code BEFORE </body>)

Hi Divya Say

Hope you will help me out as I'm busy to make a blog for our trip to Australia within 2 weeks.

And maybe you have some more usefull tips regarding my blog

Many thanks allready ,Markus from the netherlands

You should have enabled the comment-form system in your blog, to complete this hack.

Pls read here:
embedded comment-form in your blogger

After doing the above hack, write any small post, to see the comment-form in action. Then try this "Smilies hack"

Regards
Sai

De Bronnetjes said...

I couldn't find the excact code in the embedded-form blogger that was required so I used a similar .
But I received an Error on the above of my blogger site :(

Divya Sai said...

Welcome again Robin,

I have checked your blog's source code,
so you have to find this in the template:

<h4 id='comment-post-message'>Een reactie plaatsen</h4>

Just below that add the first code,
and then follow the instructions given above to add the second code.....tell me if it works or not !

Regards
Sai

De Bronnetjes said...

Hi Sai

Sorry to disturb but I can't find the words you mentioned ,maybe it's me ,cause my english is not that well as I am from the netherlands.
Don't know if this is a good idea but can I send you the HTML from my blogspot so you can have a look at it and maybe fix my problem.
Thanks for your time so far

Regards Markus

Divya Sai said...

Well your english is perfect....it is just the coding work that makes us crazy sometimes :)
Anyways.....it's Ok..you can send me your blog's template...i'll check it and tell you where exactly you have to add the code

Hi Sai

I've tried to send my HTML template by your contact form but it said there are to many characters.
So used this comment form but received the error

Divya Sai said...

That's great Markus...
I am happy too, that everything's working now!

One suggestion for you is, to change the background of those smiley images in your blog, so that codes may be clearly visible.

Here's what you have to do:
find this:
background: #eeeddf; [in the first code]

Then in place of #eeeddf, use any other color code.
You can use this page, to get some color codes:

Hi Chris

You have customized your comments section, due to which these smileys are not showing up, sorry to say but you have to remove that pink color from your comments section(and whatever associated with it), so that these smileys are visible in your comments !

In the mean time, i'll try to find a better alternative !

I visited your blog, there's some problem with the complete comment-system in your blog, the "post a comment" is not working in any of the posts !

Roll Tide said...

I'm trying add my smilies to my blog can you tell me step by step how to do it. please

Divya Sai said...

Tell me where are you facing the problem....

NOTE: The first code is to tell the readers, that you have enabled smileys in your blog.

Second code does the actual work of converting text in to smileys......

So even if you do not add the first code, BUT ADD THE SECOND CODE, and some visitor writes nice to meet you :), then in his message :) will be converted in to a smiley !

Roll Tide said...

I add smilies now I can't see them on the bottom when you go to post.

Roll Tide said...

i did all the codes and i saved it on my edit xhtml

i did everything right not sure why they are not showing up

Divya Sai said...

Your blog is open to only invited readers, so I cannot check it.....make sure that at least you have added the second code properly !

If you have modified comment section, then they may not work...for example you'll not see smileys in this comment, but you can see them in my next comment

:) :P :-/

Bikers Blog said...

That is because I have modified the code for my comments, due to which smileys do not work !

Temporarily change your blog to MINIMA template, then add the code, and see if that works !

NOTE: First back up your widgets in text / note pads before changing the template...

Nah, thats not my problem... see Im the admin of my blog [obviously] and my admin posts show up in blue as opposed to orange with guests of the blog. Now i would still like to post with the blue color, but with smileys.
take a look here to see what i mean:

Hmm Adrian, actually due to time constraint I wasn't able to look at any code for a few days....
Anyways I have just checked the javascript file of this hack and found the weak point in the coding, actually you just have to change the "class" in the code, which I think I would better explain in a new post, coz this is a common problem faced by many bloggers.
See this smiley :) in my customized owner comment !

it's not working

Divya Sai said...

It won't work if you paste the image's url, you simply have to type the code in front of the those smiley icons, like this " :) " for a smiling face :)

Wow, cool trick, just put it, tried, and working perfectly fine :D

One question: Do you know how to make the icons clickable so when clicked they write the code direcly in the comment form ? Liekin some vBulletin forums..

If you dont have it, I dont care, you done enought with this trick XD

Divya Sai said...

@ Danoxs

Yeah, clickable smileys would be really a perfect feature for our blogs, but that requires tweaking of the comment form itself, as when you click on the smiley the code has to be inserted into the form, and we are not presently allowed to tweak in to some of the Blogger's "core" features, that includes the comment form....so just wait and hope that Blogger team thinks of something like this :)

Hi Divya,
I can't find this code on my template:

b:if cond='data: post.embedCommentForm'

What should I do?

Divya Sai said...

Hi 'Dimples',

As the first line says, it is better if you have embedded comment-form in your blog, and then you add this smileys to your blog. So once you add the comment-form to your blog, then you'll see that code in your template.

Regards
Sai

Bonar13 said...

why doesn't it work in my blog?
the first code is just simply showing what text to be replaced with image right?

sorry for my bad english . .

Divya Sai said...

Hello Bonar,

Before uploading the file (smiley.js), you have to make these changes in the file and save it.

Replace this:
b.item(i).getAttribute('CLASS') == 'comment-body'

with this:
b.item(i).getAttribute('CLASS') == 'commenttext'

And replace this:
c.item(i).getAttribute('CLASS') == 'owner-Body'

with this:
c.item(i).getAttribute('CLASS') == 'commenttext-admin'

Now once you edit and save the file, then upload it to hotlinkfiles/sigmirror or to your web.id account :)
That's it :)

thanks 4 your big help,
it works like a charm :D

Let's test :) :X

3T said...

Hey Sai, it really works on yours... so cool!

I've done everything just follow instructions. The first code seems to be ok because I see smileys above the comment window.

The problem may be the second code because it doesn't appear as it should, I still see only the signs I typed in. I tried to put the 2nd code right after tag body too, it didn't help. I even tried to change "comment-body" to "commenttxt" (found it in the template) but don't know if "owner-body" should be "commenttxt admin"?

My template is quite of a customized one so I can do no more. Please please please help me figure out the problem. I love and am so used to these yahoo icons. I did send you an email with my template but you can also visit my blog from the link below. Thank you so much!

Sai said...

Hello Trang, well you have almost got it well, but the class used in your blog is different, instead of comment-body use comments-PII-2 textarea
That's it...

3T said...

still, it doesn't work Sai...

would you try this replacing method and tell me its weakness? (or if you can solve the problem, that'd be great). It's not in English but very simple. It definitely works in mine but it makes the page run slowly, I cannot remember all the abbr and cannot click it.

or new version (English)

thank you
