How to change Blogger/BlogSpot address

I get numerous mails from bloggers, regarding "How to change their web-address". Although Blogger does allow you to change your blog url, easily and anytime as you wish, but I would not suggest you to do this frequently or if you have a well-established blog. The upside of this change is of course you will get a blog url as per your choice. But there are many disadvantages of changing your blog url.

  • First of all, you may lose any of your loyal visitors who frequently visit your blog, if they are not informed about this change.
  • Secondly you will lose your Alexa ranking, which solely depends on your blog's url.
  • Thirdly if you have any pages bookmarked in social bookmarking websites, then those links will now be considered as invalid links.
  • And lastly if you have been linked by any other blogs with your present blog's address, then you will even lose the link juice you were previously getting.
So in case you have a relatively new blog (around 2/3 months old) and not having more than 50 blog posts, then you may change the url, otherwise do it only if you think it is absolutely necessary for you.

Direct Method:
Log in to Blogger,
Now go to "Settings" -> "Publishing" tab.

Change the url (blog-address), enter the captcha and hit the "Save Settings" button. That's it. You have a new blog-url now.

Alternatively, you can follow this method (In case you do not have too many posts in your present blog):
Create a new blog, with the desired blog-address.
Export your present blog (From Settings -> Basic tab).
And now import your present blog to the new blog.

By this method, both your blogs (new and old) will be live and you can place some banners at your present blog, for your regular readers, telling them about your new blog, making sure that you do not leave anyone behind.

NOTE: If you are planning to shift to a custom domain, then I would suggest you to do it without delay despite of the disadvantages described above, because you not only get a professional domain, but you can also redirect your present web-traffic to the new domain easily. Also remember that with increasing web traffic and popularity of blogs, global TLDs are now really very difficult to register (as most of the web-domains are already registered), so if you are serious about blogging then register a domain as soon as possible (it hardly costs you $8/9 per domain per year).

Nice informative post!

I have purchased a new domain and used the custom domain blogger and I dont have any problems regarding to my loyal visitors but what bothers me is my newly purchased domain(april 1 2009) does not indexing my recent posts but my old post are indexed well. Does my new url need to be index by google? if yes how long should I wait to index my newly url that has a average of 20 users online

Tnx again Divya Sai

Google rates any website with the number of backlinks it has from other website, if your present new domain or even the older (Blogspot address) has sufficient no. of backlinks then your blog will be indexed soon.
Anyways if you have booked ur domain only today, then you have to wait for a few days to get your blog properly indexed by Google.

I advice you to add your sitemap to Google

Is there a way to redirect one post to another withing the same blogspot blog? I have set one post as a static front page via giving it a post date in the future. I want to redirect that post back to the root blogspot domain as to avoid duplicate content.

Can i have different domain name and titles? My domain name is not good. A different blog title can help in SEO. If i add a good title and hide it behind title picture , will it be helpfull? I mean what ppl will see is title in picture similar to domain but actual title containing some good keywords. Reply me soon pls.

Yes you can do that, but make sure that both are related and don't over feed them with keywords.
While uploading the header image, mark the radio-button "Instead of title and description" That's it.

I recently changed the blogspot address of my blog. I have less than 50 posts and my blog is only a few months old. I knew I'd lose some visitors, but I thought the new address would become accessible to more visitors in time, so it would be alright.

I also submitted the new URL to Google for indexing.

Now, my old URL is not live and my new URL is not accessible in Google (unless you type the whole URL if you know the new URL), so I'm not getting visitors anymore, except for those whom I sent a link myself.

The new URL was accessible in Google Images (visitors clicked some images from my site in Google Images and came here) for a couple of days, but now all images from my blog have disappeared from Google Images.

Earlier, typing the blog title in Google could lead people to my blog. Now, typing the title leads to old URL which is not live. It doesn't lead to the new URL.

The cache of the old URL is still accessible in Google, but not many people think of clicking on the cache.

Do you think the new URL will become accessible in Google Images in a few days? Is there anything I can do about it?

Hi
Wonder if you have a tips for me. I have started an account for a friend (the one I'm signed into now) but before I registered the account I registered it by mistake on my own account with the address spoonjackson.blogspot
Trying to erase it, it got locked in for 3 month. I've waited those 3 month because I thought after that I will be able to use the same address on a new account - but NO! I only get the message it's not available, although no one else is using it. Do you know a away out of this?
I don't want to have it registered on my own account.

Change to another within the same blog is a way to lead a post? In a post on the front page of the future by giving me a post set up in static. I root for your domain to avoid duplicate content, want to redirect back to the post.
