Errors Fixed - Blogger Jump Break (Truncated Posts) Issues Solved

The latest feature by Blogger, enables you to truncate your posts and show "Read more..." links beneath the posts on the homepage.
But some glitches have been reported by many users.

ERROR #1
If posts do not get truncated at all, then check the code you are using, as it should be
<!-- more --> and not <!--more-->

notice the space used before and after the word "more".

ERROR #2
You are able to truncate the posts, but the "read more" link is not visible on the homepage:
In this case, you have to edit your template. So simply follow these instructions:
Log in to Blogger
Go to "Layout" -> "Edit HTML" and select "Expand Widget Templates"

Now find this code in the template:
<data:post.body/>

And immediately BELOW/AFTER that code, add this code:
<b:if cond='data:post.hasJumpLink'>
<div class='jump-link'>
<a expr:href='data:post.url'><data:post.jumpText/></a>
</div>
</b:if >

NOTE: You may use your own phrase instead of "read more..." by replacing <data:post.jumpText/> in the above code with your own text or a small image.

ERROR #3
Finally some bloggers have noticed that whenever they add the code "<!-- more -->" to any of their posts, the sidebar shifts to the bottom area of the blog.
To avoid this, you simply have to make sure that the code
<!-- more -->
is not present in between any <div>...</div> tags. If you find any such tags, simply replace the words div with span.

So if you want to truncate this post,
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Visbile part of the post on homepage
<!-- more -->
Hidden part of the post on homepage
</div>

without affecting the location of your blog's sidebar

then simply replace those div tags with span tags, like this:
<span style="text-align: justify;">
Visbile part of the post on homepage
<!-- more -->
Hidden part of the post on homepage
</span>

Hi... I love your blog...

I used the original hack, installing the read more.js on my file host...worked great.

I just removed it, maybe not completely? Either case, the new !--- more --- method worked fine before along side with my old method, but now it's not working at all. I want to switch to the new method.

Thx!

@ Bolang,
Yeah there's some problem with HLF today....I am tired of finding a perfect free solution for everybody, to upload and link files.
Presently during problems, I am switching b/w these sites:
HLF, SigMirror.com and Boxstr.com(not for .js files)
and now I am trying mydatanest.com, let's see if this one works out better.

As I said before, I thank you deeply for posting about this. Now, I hope that you will help me with a small problem that I am having with this feature.

As you can see on my blog here: http://mywelfare2wealth.info, the "read more" link is showing below my "Share the love" widget, which I believe may confuse readers. Is there a way to get this link to show above that widget? Please let me know.

Hi Kenya,
Actually you just have to paste the code of read more before the code for sharing widget.

Or you can hide the sharing widget in the homepage and so only read more will be visible, use this method to show sharing widget only in the posts pages:
http://bloggerstop.net/2008/12/show-widgets-in-only-specific-pages-or.html

Or you shift the position of "Read More" to the right side:
You have to use this code, to position it to right:
<div style="text-align: right;">Read More !</div>

And also, if I am not wrong you are simply redirecting your domain "mywelfare2wealth.info" to "mywelfare2wealth.blogspot.com", which is making it difficult to see the code, and also it will be difficult for your readers to link to any specific post, as in the url field always your blog url is being displayed. So I would suggest you to use the DNS management method instead:
http://bloggerstop.net/2008/10/get-domain-unlimited-hosting-and.html

Thanks for the article, very helpful!
By the way, you're also supposed to be able to change the link test by going to Dashboard - Layout - Blog Posts - Edit (bottom right), and modifying the "Post page link text" field. The problem is that settings on this page don't get saved. I opened a discussion in Blogger Help Forums regarding this, but received no response so far.

Yeah that method has been mentioned in the post at Blogger Buzz, but as we bloggers generally use highly customized blogs, so their may be some compatibility issues, & so I generally prefer direct editing of html/css and it increases our understanding of the template too :)

@Kurt

End the span tag before "more" and then start another one after it, like this:

<span>
Part of post to show on Homepage
</span>

<!-- more -->

<span>
Part of post to hide on Homepage
</span>

Funny enough, it looks fine when you're just looking at the posts them selves but not on the home page. Here's a link: www.randomactsofkurtosis.com

The invisible text would be in between 2 visible texts.

That is certainly possible, but not by this method, rather use the previous one:
http://bloggerstop.net/2008/10/blogger-help-add-read-more-link-to-your.html

PS: You can use both the methods in the same blog, i.e. for some blogs you can use this method (<!-- more -->) and for others you can use the above mentioned tutorial (<span class="fullpost">)

Hello,

I wanted to thank you for your helpfull post.
I was in error #3 case.
I followed your advice, but then with (span style="text-align: center;") , my text was'nt at center anymore.
So I just put a (/div) before the (!-- more --) and it's perfectly working, at least on my template.
May be an easier and faster way than to replace with span and then don't have the text at the wanted position.

Thanks again !

PS : of course replace the () by <> signs, I had to change them because no html allowed in comments ^^

Ya to solve the error #3, one has to simply avoid the more tag in between a div tag, but just to avoid the confusion of opening and closing tags I have suggested to replace the div tags with span tags. Anyways what you are doing is perfectly correct...so good luck with your blog :)

Hi, I am having the same problem as Kurt...I tried the span and div tags, but I have so far had no luck. Here is part of the code: (with "(" replacing "<" as necessary)

(div style="text-align: justify;")
U.E.S. Indiana Jones
201.-11
Sometimes, Santiago wished his brain would just shut up.
He’d been right in the middle of the perfect date—dreaming, of course; but hey, who didn’t?—a night of high stakes gambling in Las Vegas with a gorgeous blond Venutian—the new type being grown in the black market crèche pools on the Paradise World for the big timers down Earthside:
(/div)

(!-- more --)

(div style="text-align: justify;")
The point was, it had been the best kind of dream:

Any suggestions??

@Landon...
This is the exact post-code from your blog:

<div class='post-body entry-content'>
<div style="text-align: justify;"><br />U.E.S. Indiana Jones<br />201.-11<br />Sometimes, Santiago wished his brain would just shut up.<br /> He&#8217;d been right in the middle of the perfect date&#8212;dreaming, of course; but hey, who didn&#8217;t?&#8212;a night of high stakes gambling in Las Vegas with a gorgeous blond Venutian&#8212;the new type being grown in the black market crèche pools on the Paradise World for the big timers down Earthside: mouthwatering blonde; dark skin that was the perfect blend of oriental, African, and Latina, smoothed out with some anglo genes; eyes the color of amber, or gold, depended on the light; and full lips that were just begging for attention&#8212;anyways, the point was the flaca was perfect. And he&#8217;d been perfect too, at craps, poker, black jack, Martian Hold&#8217;em . . . he hadn&#8217;t been able to touch a chip or card without walking away a whole order of magnitude richer. Gambling was one of the few pastimes that made Santiago grateful for his brain; the rest of the time, his super-sized cranium was more trouble than it was worth. No matter what the bigwigs at New Harvard claimed.<br /><br /></div><br /><br />

<div style='clear: both;'></div>

The text in bold is your post, but there's only one div tag in it.

None of the "read more" hacks work on my blog.

I don't seem to have the Jump Link button (why?).

And the !-- more -- doesn't work.

And at one point I added a hack to my template that did the scanclass="fullpost"/scan coding to my posts.

None worked.

I have a feeling I'm missing something super-obvious? :-/

Hello Divya Sai,

This is a very informative post, thank you.

However, I am facing an annoying issue. I started off with the "Minima Stretch" Blogger template and adjusted it to my liking. I defined some styles that would allow me to enter my post in some nested "bubbles" (divs with different backgrounds and rounded corners).

So my posts would look like this:

<div class="round" id="outer">

<div class="round" id="normal">
introduction
</div>

<div class="round" id="normal">
contents
</div>

</div>

Now, what I would like to do would be to add a <!-- more --> link just before the div with "contents":
* if I do this, I get Error #3 you described in your post;
* if I try to fix it as described, I am forced to give up on the "outer" div (and thus ruin my neat formatting), because span does not behave like div when drawing bubbles or rectangles.

Needless to say, the posts are too long to get on the home page without "Read more" links.

Do you have any idea on how to overcome this problem (or whether it is even possible to do so)?

Alright, never mind, I found a JavaScript "hack", although I am not entirely happy with it (one major drawback is that even when you are heading directly to blogURL/post.html you still do not get the whole post by default and have to click "More..." to see the "collapsed" section).

However, for now, "it works!" (TM), therefore I am posting the solution here, for anyone else that is in desperate need of keeping the inner div nesting:

You won't find more! anywhere in the post, you have to type wherever you want to truncate the post.

@Alexandra
Just checked your blog.
I too have written a tutorial on javascript based read more hack, it will show thumbnail images too: Auto-ReadMore

But I will suggest you to go with the manual and the previous way of truncating posts: Add Read More To Blogger Blogs

Just make sure that the fullpost-span is inside your outer-div BUT out of all other divs

Sai

Divya Sai,

Thank you for the suggestion. The tutorial you pointed to in the second link is great. The two main advantages are:

* no more JavaScript; I saw that solution from the Blogger team as somewhat wasteful. Each post included body onload=function(), which is kind of a dirty trick;
* clicking the "read more" link now shows the whole post, without keeping the hidden part... still hidden until re-clicked (unlike the Blogger solution).

Also, at the time of my previous comment I had not yet linked my profile to the new blog which uses those nested divs I was talking about. Here, in case you want to see what "fancy nestings" I was referring to. (They're not fancy, it's just that I spent an entire week-end on them and I was sorry to have to let them go due to the faulty Jump-Break Blogger implementation.)

Thank you very much again and may you have a great day!

Well if you are referring to the limited width of your blog, then either make your blog more widder, or switch to a custom made template: Free Blogger Templates

February 10, 2010 1:54 AM delete

Wow, you provide wonderful information and fixes here. I however, am at a loss of what to do to get my sidebar back. I have a custom template and needed to add the coding to be able to see the "Read More." Then, I added the (!-- more --) into my html where I wanted the jump.

After that, I noticed my sidebar was now below my posts. Also, on my Layout page in Blogger (where all our widgets are, etc.) the Post section was now across my entire layout, the same width as my header. It can not be moved back to the left of my sidebar.

I then removed the jump code from my template and from each post I had added it to. But, my template did not return to normal and my sidebar is still below my posts. Obviously, it's because it's the width of my whole template now. I checked the html coding of my template against my original, and the widths have not been altered here.

Do you know how I might proceed? I even tried copying my more recent posts into Wordpad and then posting them back into blogger, to no avail.

Thank you for all your wonderful information and posts on your blog.

@ The Holistic Diva,

Okay...make sure that your latest post is NOT having any <!-- more --> tag in it (check the post while Edit HTML tab is selected).

Then go to Dashboard -> Settings -> Formatting
and against the first option, i.e. "Show" type "1 post"
Save it.
Check your blog.
Now tell me if the sidebar is still going down or not.
Again set the number as "4".

Thank you so much for your quick reply. I had already done all those steps, but I went back and redid them to be sure. No change. It all happened after that darn buggy Blogger jump link. All is removed but my body post still remains the same width as my header in my template layout.

Do you have any other ideas? Thank you very much for your time. I appreciate it, and your assistance.

I'd like to add, regarding my "post" area in Layout. I just noticed its been turned into a moveable widget, unlike my test blog. It can be picked up to drag like a widget, only it won't stay when I tried to move it back where it belongs. Again, this occurred after the jump link, and remained after removing all that code.

Look at the code in the solution for Error #2
A similar code will be tehre in your blog template, but an extra code will also be there, i.e. + #more

So, instead of that code, use the one from the post above (in solution for Error #2), that will show the complete post instead of only the hidden part.

I'm facing some problem with jump break.
See this page: http://www.lalitaalaalitah.com/search/label/%E0%A4%88%E0%A4%B6%E0%A5%8D%E0%A4%B5%E0%A4%B0%E0%A4%AA%E0%A5%8D%E0%A4%B0%E0%A4%A4%E0%A4%BF%E0%A4%AA%E0%A4%A4%E0%A5%8D%E0%A4%A4%E0%A4%BF%E0%A4%AA%E0%A5%8D%E0%A4%B0%E0%A4%95%E0%A4%BE%E0%A4%B6%E0%A4%83

Sorry for long link.
The problem is :
1st and 2nd post are being shown in same enclosure. This is against my rules set in template.
Others posts are having separate enclosure which is according to my template.
Can you point me to the error so that I can repair it ?

Hey !
I found the cause for above said error.
It's actually not an error.
If you post 2 or more posts on same day, they will be shown in a single enclosure.
So, I'll be changing dates to show them separately.

Another thing, I'm using navigation icons from your site. I think you will not mind it.

I tried entering just with one space before more and one space after more and nothing is happening. I do not see more in text and my post is not truncated. I entered the after the word "mango" and here is the HTML below. Any help would be aammmmazing!!
